Hello, my fuzzy friends!

The phrase “breeding true” came up during a recent group conversation, and boy howdy, it left me scratching my head.

What does it really mean?

• Does it mean every baby looks alike?
• Does it mean staying within one rabbit family?
• Are we breeding true to a color, a pedigree, the ARBA Standard of Perfection, or something else entirely?

I did a little research, a lot of soul-searching, and then sat down to share my thoughts in this week’s Sinfully Soft's YouTube Live.

My conclusion may not be what everyone expects.

Predictable does not always mean good.

If an entire litter looks alike, but those rabbits are not moving the breed forward, what have we gained?

For me, breeding true is not about sameness for the sake of sameness. It means producing the qualities we want again and again.

With Giant Angoras, I am looking at the whole rabbit:

• Correct body and type
• Beautiful and useful three-fiber wool
• Proper size and furnishings
• Fertility and mothering ability
• Health and longevity
• A sweet, manageable temperament

One gorgeous rabbit does not prove a breeding program. The babies, the records, and the generations that follow tell us what is truly working.

I also talk about the differences between purebred, linebred, outcrossed, and crossbred rabbits, why I have not created a new breed, and why the ARBA Standard of Perfection remains my Bible.

The Standard tells me whether I am making a Giant Angora.

My barn rules tell me whether I want a barn full of them!
